  16.    This memo provides information for the Internet community.  It does
  17.    not specify an Internet standard.  Distribution of this memo is
  18.    unlimited.

  22.    This article originally appeared in Volume 2 Number 12, (December
  23.    1992) of Matrix News, the monthly newsletter of Matrix Information
  24.    and Directory Services, Inc. (MIDS).

  26. 1.  Which Books
  27.  
  28.    Here is a list of books related to using the Internet, which is the
  29.    global and exponentially growing network of more than a million
  30.    computers that communicate by interactive use of the TCP/IP
  31.    protocols, for the use of millions of users.  This article was
  32.    prompted by the recent publication of nine or ten books on the
  33.    Internet in the space of a year (some are so new they aren't even
  34.    published yet).  I have also included some books that have been
  35.    around for quite a long time (as long ago as the dim past of 1984).
  36.    I think all of them contain useful information for people new to the
  37.    Internet.
  38.  
  39.    Some of the books included here are about more than the Internet.
  40.    Some of them are about the Matrix, which is the set of all computer
  41.    networks worldwide that exchange electronic mail.  The Matrix
  42.    includes FidoNet, UUCP, BITNET, USENET, the Internet, and many
  43.    others, but is not limited to any one of those networks.  This
  44.    particular bibliographic collection is oriented around the largest
  45.    computer network in the world, the Internet, because of all the
  46.    recent books about that network.  Matrix News continues to publish
  47.    information about the Matrix, including but not limited to the
  48.    Internet.

  120.    technical aspects of technology, such as the TCP/IP protocols.
  121.    Instead, I have included books about the resources and users of the
  122.    Internet.  I have grouped them in rough classifications for
  123.    convenience of presentation.  Several of these books fit several
  124.    classifications.  For that reason and others, the classifications
  125.    should be taken as illustrative, not definitive.  Table 1 summarizes
  126.    some features of all the books described.
